This SVQ is based on standards developed
by the Merchant Navy Training Board NTO. The Merchant
Navy Training Board NTO represent a wide variety of
people working in a broad range of occupations within
navigation, communication and service operations on board
merchant ships.The standards for this SVQ can be
obtained from the Scottish Qualifications Authority on
0141-248 8529.
Structure
of the SVQ
The way the SVQ is made up is shown below.

Mandatory units
Candidates must complete all of these
units:
AX9J 04
Contribute to Safe Navigation
1 Contribute to controlling and monitoring
a navigational watch
2 Manoeuvre vessel when contributing to
the efficient running of the watch
AX9K 04
Contribute to Maintaining the Safety
and Security of the Vessel
1 Secure the vessel at anchor
2 Secure and adjust the vessel's position
during mooring operations
3 Monitor the situation of the vessel when
moored
4 Secure the vessel for and at sea

Prepare for Maintenance
1 Select and prepare resources
2 Identify and prepare work area
AX9M 04
Maintain Maritime Vessels and Equipment
1 Define individual maintenance plans
prior to commencing work
2 Carry out work to maintain and restore
hull fabric and fittings

Contribute to Emergency Procedures on
Board Ship
1 Respond to an emergency on board ship
2 Fight fires on board ship
3 Apply search and rescue procedures
during an emergency
4 Survive at sea in the event of
abandonment
5 Apply basic immediate first aid action
on board ship

Take Charge of a Survival Craft and
Small Boats (includes CPSC)
1 Take charge of a survival craft during
abandonment
2 Manoeuvre small boats for specific
operations

Maintain a Safe Working Environment and
Practices
1 Maintain the surface cleanliness of
plant and work areas
2 Monitor and maintain the safety of the
work environment
3 Monitor and maintain personal health and
safety on board ship
4 Handle potentially hazardous goods and
situations

1 Receive stock
2 Unpack stock
3 Deal with discrepancies/damaged stock
4 Deposit stock in holding location
